But ground water from deep tube wells (depths >150m) is safe and contains arsenic in less concentration [5, 6]. According to WHO guidelines, water containing

In Bangladesh over 50 million people are exposed to naturally occurring arsenic concentrations exceeding the World Health Organization’s guideline of 10 μg/L. Selenium and arsenic have been shown to facilitate the excretion of each other in bile. Because of the regional geology, this biologically uncontaminated water is laced with naturally occurring arsenic in concentrations up to 40 times over the declared safe level. Arsenic as a public health problem was first identified in West Bengal, India, where the geological formations, economic conditions, food habits, and tube wells are similar to those in Bangladesh. Arsenic levels in rice can be further elevated in rice growing on arsenic contaminated soils, potentially greatly increasing arsenic exposure of the Bangladesh population.

His colleagues add that his program did not see any connection between cancer or cardiovascular issues and arsenic poisoning.
To date we estimate that about 50% of the groundwater wells in Bangladesh have arsenic concentrations greater than 10 μg/L and about 28% have concentrations greater than 50 μg/L, and as a consequence that about 46 million people are exposed to concentrations greater than 10 μg/L and about 28 million people to concentrations greater than 50 μg/L.

2005-12-27 · Results and Discussion. The current paradigm within Bangladesh and West Bengal is that Fe(III) (hydr)oxides remain the dominant host of arsenic even at well depth (i.e., 30 to 50 m) within contaminated aquifers, and that organic carbon derived either from the surface or from detrital material (2, 3, 6) is stimulating reductive dissolution of the iron phases and concomitant release of arsenic.

The government and other agencies like UNICEF installed wells to provide fresh water in underdeveloped areas of Bangladesh, but later found disease related to consumption of this water.

This study of 30 analytes per sample and 112 samples suggests that the most significant health risk from drinking Bangladesh's tubewell water is chronic As poisoning. The As concentration ranged from < 0.0007 to 0.64 mg/L, with 48% of samples above the 0.01 mg/L World Health Organization drinking water guideline.
Arsenic levels in rice can be further elevated in rice growing on arsenic contaminated soils, potentially greatly increasing arsenic exposure of the Bangladesh population. Rice grain grown in the regions where arsenic is building up in the soil had high arsenic concentrations, with three rice grain samples having levels above 1.7 microg g(-1). Arsenic and diabetes. Several studies, including a review of the literature by NTP, have suggested an association between low-to-moderate levels of arsenic and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes. 7. Translational research on arsenic. At least 30 million people in Bangladesh are exposed to arsenic in their drinking water.
